Volume 10, Issue 1: Spring 2007

Staff Notes

Tracey Reed Armant left the CIRCL staff in January to assume the position of Program Manager of the Child Advocacy Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

While working at CIRCL, Tracey coordinated the videoconference, revised and implemented the survey of Trauma Centers to ascertain their injury prevention activities, and designed a survey to gather the injury/injury prevention activities of the faculty and staff at the University of Pittsburgh.  Tracey was also active in community-wide injury prevention efforts, participating in community forums with One Vision/One Life and the Hilltop Health Ministries.  She actively worked to coordinate consultation between injury prevention programs and University faculty.  Specifically, she coordinated faculty consultation with Healthy Home Resources and Travel Aid’s infant car seat give-away program.

Debra Morris, CIRCL’s administrative assistant, is working on her degree in Media and Professional Communication at Pitt in the College of General Studies. CIRCL is proud to announce that Debra has been awarded the Steel Gow Scholarship from the College of General Studies for academic excellence for the 2007-2008 academic year.  Debra is further involved with Pitt as a counsel member on the College of General Studies’ Student Government.

Tom Truong will be leaving CIRCL at the end of June 2007 due to the successful ending of a contract between the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) and CIRCL.  In 1993 the state required HC4 to add external cause of injury codes (E-codes) to their data collection efforts.  In 1995 the PADOH contracted CIRCL to do analyses of the HC4 injury mortality data utilizing the E-codes.  The results of the analyses have driven the planning and evaluation of programs and policies aimed at controlling and preventing injuries within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Now almost 12 years later through a CDC capacity building grant, the PADOH will be able to hire the necessary staff to do the analyses in house and continue the methods that CIRCL has established for the E-code project.

Tom has diligently worked for CIRCL on the E-code project since March 2005 and he will be missed.  CIRCL wishes Tom the best as he further pursues his career interests in health services research.
